# AI biohazard hype must not distract from today's real biological risks

A Nature commentary argues that speculation about AI-enabled bioweapons and lab-made pandemics is drawing attention and funding away from biological threats that already exist, such as natural outbreaks, laboratory accidents and gaps in global biosurveillance. The authors warn that overhyping future AI scenarios can distort policy priorities and fuel counterproductive restrictions on legitimate research. They call for keeping near-term, well-documented risks at the centre of biosecurity planning.
