# Anthropic warns small AI models could soon build self-spreading IoT botnets

Anthropic has warned that relatively small AI models may soon be capable of writing malware that spreads on its own across internet-connected devices. The concern centres on IoT botnets, which hijack poorly secured routers, cameras and sensors to launch attacks at scale. If realised, the risk would lower the barrier to running large-scale cyberattacks without skilled human operators.

**Importance:** 3/5
